A Poem for Downsizers

The process of downsizing can be an exciting time. It can also be a time for contemplation and worry about what lies ahead. John Tidridge has written a series of poems that describe his feelings and thoughts as Maureen and he go through the moving process.

Griesbach-1

Years ago, it would seem, we came across Griesbach

Army Barracks all trim and green,

Canadian army;

An accident occurs, on base, an army base.

I am sent and there meet a young police officer, RCMP.

I am an experienced City Officer, out of my jurisdiction.

He is young, I help him out, that’s what we do.

It’s Griesbach.

Jurisdictions change and now the camp is ‘City’.

I am sent on a call, not easy to forget.

A young man has taken his life. A soldier.

It’s Griesbach

Another time I am parked at the barrack gate,

The guard is changing at the guard room. I watch.

Memories come swirling back, been there, done that.

The soldiers are smart. I think of British Grenadiers.

My regiment.

It’s Griesbach.

More and more years have gone by;

Things change.

Condos for sale says the ad.

The landscape has changed but we know where to go...

The plans are displayed for all to see,

Concrete construction, a kitchen, bedrooms one, two and perhaps three

The prices are good, or so it would seem.

We are two young for:

On Sunday drives for many a time,

We circle around Victory Point,

The plans are now a building...

At Griesbach!!

In our minds eye, planning, as many do,

We know where we want our condo:

Main floor, near the front door;

Overlooking the lake

At Griesbach.

Over the years condos appear in ads, for sale.

The location is given, we know where it’s at!

We circle the building trying to locate,

where the condo might be...

No, it’s not where we want at Victory Point,

Advancing in years we decide,

Were too old to move, again.

Then, out of the blue, an acquaintance,

A greeter at a Home Depot Store.

We chat often, we learn

He's in Victory Point,

on the main floor close to the door:

in a condo; and later, for sale.

This story has not ended and;

we are not sure how it will turn out.

But there will be an end and we will share, about:

Griesbach
