I’m building a rolling 2-year study. Because as an industry we lose almost 75% of new industry members here in Edmonton over the first 2 years, I decided to start following many new industry members to learn how their careers developed.
I became concerned because numerous people I spoke to were dipping their toes in the water. They were tentatively launching their REALTOR careers but also holding down a full-time job.
This concerned me. I have always believed that the demands of a REALTORS job demand full time.
Yesterday I launched a survey on a Facebook REALTOR group in Edmonton and the results stunned me.
Note I didn’t ask “Can a person be REALTOR part time?”
Rather, I asked this question:” In your opinion is it possible to launch a real estate career when also working another job?”
YES - 86
NO - 83
MAYBE - 7
93 folks said yes or maybe.
That’s 53% of the total respondents.
83 folks said no (I guess they never tried it)
Notable comments included:
Sabrina said “I did it for 18 months. Nearly killed me, but I didn’t have the luxury of quitting my full-time job. Such a relief when I was able to work as an agent full time.”
Crystal said “I did it for 2 years was able to dissolve my company and focus on real estate full time. If I had listened to everyone who told me I couldn’t do I wouldn’t be in my dream city today.”
Amy said “I had another job my first 10 months (8-3 pm Mon-Fri)… most clients wanted to meet evening weekends at first. As I got busier, I used up my sick days to do real estate until I realized I could not (sic) longer balance the two. I left my secure union job, regular paycheck and medical benefits… took the leap and have not regretted it once.”
Sean said “I think it would really depend on the job and the person. I worked in Automotive industry and had an amazing GM that gave me the flexibility to do both. If it wasn't for that I would not have survived the first 2 years while I did this. I would have gone back to selling cars. It allowed me to grow my business to the point where I couldn't do both and made the easy decision to do Real Estate full time after that. January will be 11 years in this amazing industry. If I had to do it over again I would have joined a team right off the bat, but didn't really know the benefits of that till it was too late.”
So, I guess the answer is yes you can launch your career”
IF you make an extreme effort,
IF your other job has some flexibility and
For a maximum of about 2 years.
