Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Therese Sheen one of the Retirement Living Consultants at Chartwell Emerald Hills Sherwood Park.
This is what I learned.
The building that she described as ‘the house’ is newer and it was completed in November 2019. It would certainly make for a sturdy home, being constructed of concrete of steel and actually comprises of 2 buildings joined by a ‘bridge’ incorporated into the overall structure. Concrete and steel is widely considered ‘premium’ for communal living, as it tends to be the quietest.
The complex offers several levels of care. Specifically:
1. Memory Care – for those with symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s,
2. Assisted living
3. Independent Supported Living and
4. Independent Living
There is currently no waiting list for the independent living category and there is around 260 unit’s available total. At the time of writing there was plenty of choice. Therese mentioned that she had 82 vacant units.
As an independent living resident, Therese offers the option to take a 632 ft2 one bedroom unit, or a 1095 ft 2 bedroom unit.
You can choose to take meal plans full time, part time or not at all.
Therese explained to me that Chartwell is a distinct service provider for the following reasons:
1. They offer industry leading meal plan flexibility. They can prepare all meals , some meals or no meals at all.
2. They offer some of the largest suites in the assisted living market segment.
3. There is no charge for a second resident in the unit*.
Therese mentioned that they like all residents to sign a 12-month lease commitment, but there is an early exit clause if you change your mind. The benefit to you she explained is that it guarantees your pricing for the entire agreement.
Therese gave me a ‘grand tour’ and I noted that ‘the house’ has numerous features including: a communal dining and gathering area, a games room, a secure sun deck and a party room.
When I made my visit, one of the residents was playing the piano in the communal area and many other residents were sat around her enjoying the performance.
