What’s It Like to Live in the Blatchford Community?
Are you familiar with the Blatchford community?
Do you know anything about the history of the site?
On both counts its fascinating.
Back in 1927 the then Mayor of Edmonton Kenneth Blatchford convinced the managers of Edmonton development to build ‘an air harbour’. It wasn’t long before the facility literally put Edmonton on the map.
In 1931, Wiley Post was greeted by large crowds when he landed at the airfield as part of his successful attempt to become the first person to fly around the world. From 1940 to 1944 the airfield was known as RCAF Edmonton & functioned as part of the Northwest Staging Route whereby Russia’s defenses were reinforced. At one point it’s been claimed that the airfield was the busiest in the world. The last plane to take off from the airfield was a small private aircraft on November 30th 2013.
Today the future of the former airport lands is bright & exciting. According to Kevin Reid President of Encore Master Builders (the first builder to pull a permit to construct a home on the site) Blatchford community is like no other. The 525 acre site is unique as the largest piece of redevelopment land in North America.
Encore Master Builders & Landmark Homes together with a select group of other building firms is going to create an amazing medium to high density community just minutes from the Edmonton downtown core.
Here are 3 exciting features you should know about the Blatchford community.
1. Sustainability Focus
The community features a District Energy Sharing System. The geothermal system draws heat from deep underground providing the community with a source of warm air that can be both heated further, or cooled as season dictates. Other stations will be built as the community matures. There are also plans to build a heat generation system from natural waste & each home is required to be built to green codes resulting in homes 37% more efficient than the Alberta provincial standard.
2. Green Spaces & Recreation
Whilst the focus will be on building medium to high density housing, life quality for residents remains central to Blatchford’s design philosophy. When complete, residents will enjoy 80 acres of parks, ponds, bike paths, playgrounds & a market place district
3. Public Transportation & Easy Access
The community is close to downtown & the Yellowhead for easy access to & from Blatchford. Residents & visitors can also enjoy the Metro LRT line. There will be 2 stations available & the first station, Nait / Blatchford opened January 20th 2024.
